T2202A's to students: are you certified?

It's tax season again and many of you will be issuing the Tuition, Education, and Textbook Amounts Certificate(T2202A) to students for use on their personal income taxes.

We have received a few notices from members whose students have run into issues because of T2202A’s.
In order to ensure all our members are aware, the T2202A form specifically says: “Issue this certificate to a student who was enrolled during the calendar year in a qualifying educational program or a specified educational program at a post-secondary institution... certified by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSCD).”

You are NOT automatically certified to issue T2202A’s, even if you are a registered PCC.

By being a registered private career college you are eligible to apply to become certified to issue this form with HRSDC.

If you are not sure if your institution is certified to issue the form please visit this website: http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/eng/learning/canada_student_loan/MCL/html/index.shtml If you are not listed, please contact HRSDC as soon as possible at (613) 994-2138 or toll free (866) 517-5650.

Certification is only valid for 5 years, please contact HRSDC and speak to a representative about re-certification. Students will not be able to claim tuition on their personal income tax form if your institution is not certified with HRSDC and may result in students being audited by the Canada Revenue Agency.

Below we have listed some links and helpful information, please review and pass on to the appropriate person on your staff.
Thank you.
