More Students Choosing Career Colleges

Ontario’s registered private career colleges have seen an increase in enrolment this past year.
Data from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities shows more than 62,500 students enrolled at registered Private Career Colleges in Ontario, an increase of more than 6 percent from 2009.

The most recent statistics show 116,000 students enrolling at public colleges in first year, with a total of 178,500 enrolments in year one college-level programs, including private career college programs. More than 35 percent of students choosing college-level education are attending registered private career colleges.

Ontario Career Colleges continue to be a great option for students to achieve their career and educational goals,” said Peter Dykstra, President of the Ontario Association of Career Colleges.

Private career colleges offer focused, hands-on training, allowing students to complete their programs in an average of 12 months. Small class sizes, multiple intakes, shorter duration and experienced teachers are just some of the reasons students choose private career colleges.

“Career Colleges are constantly focused on training that leads to employment,” Dykstra said. “Today more than ever this is essential, as our employment landscape is constantly changing.”

“There is increasing need to train and educate high school graduates, laid off workers, newcomers to Canada, international students, aboriginal students, apprentices, and workers for the growth sectors including trades, technology, health and wellness, entertainment, and the environment,” said Paul Kitchin, Executive Director of the Ontario Association of Career Colleges.

This new data shows Ontario’s registered private career colleges are delivering the right education for the changing employment landscape.
