Belleville - Two awards for individuals who helped people become smoke-free were among those presented under the 2008 Smoke-Free Initiative Awards Program by the Hastings and Prince Edward Counties Health Unit Wednesday.
The awards were a highlight of the board’s first meeting for 2009.
The individual awards went to Pat Ginther from GH Manufacturing for providing continuing support and resources to employees and Michele Solkhon, a pharmacist at Kelly’s Guardian Pharmacy, for providing continuing support to clients.
They were two of six awards presented under the program at the start of the board meeting.
Stream Global Services, a call centre located on Dundas Street West, won the major Healthy Environment Award for implementing a no-smoking policy at their public entrances.
Rob Garden, a teacher from Prince Edward Collegiate Institute, received the School Award for using innovative teaching methods to raise awareness and educate students about current tobacco issues.
Maxwell College of Advance Technology Dental Hygiene Department received the postsecondary award for providing continuing resources to employees and clients with the assistance of their students in the program.
Gayle Deschamps, a volunteer for the Gleaners Food Bank, received the Community Award for providing continuing support and resources to clients, assisting them to become smoke-free.
Various types of smoke-free initiatives, including in-school and clinic sessions, have been a major part of the health unit’s programs for some years. A report on the continuing smoking situation in the board’s area, sharply higher than provincial averages and on the rise, was presented at the board’s previous meeting.
In presenting the awards, Dr. Richard Schabas, medical officer of health, commented: “They have helped protect the health of our community by promoting smoke-free living.”
The awards program will continue for the current year.
