Career College Students Give Back

They were crafty for a good cause. About 15 Liaison College students from the Kitchener campus participated in the “Home Sweet Home” Gingerbread Village on November 28 to raise funds and awareness for Family and Children’s Services of the Waterloo Region. Companies sponsored students to make elaborate gingerbread homes for the contest.

“Right now there are about 250 kids in foster care in the Waterloo region and another 350 in group homes,” said Chef Dean Michielsen. “We’re raising awareness and trying to find homes for these children.”
The cause is close to Michielsen’s heart. “I was a foster child over 30 years ago. I know how important it is to have a home,” he said.

Massage after murderball. It may sound like a strange combination but about 10 massage therapy students and an instructor from Medix School set up a mobile clinic at the “Crash for Cash” Wheelchair Rugby tournament in London on November 7.

Wheelchair rugby is often called “murderball” because of its full-contact nature. The students provided massages for the athletes from England, the United States and across Canada. Many members of Canada’s national wheelchair rugby team took part. Medix massage therapy students have participated in about 16 community outreach events this year.

“Our students benefit because they gain hands-on experience throughout the community which allows them to treat many different body types, with many different conditions and different responses to treatment,” said Matthew Juszczynski, RMT, Massage Therapy Outreach Coordinator at Medix in London. “It is the perfect way to experience a massage for the first time. All of our clients are fully clothed and given a chair massage using general Swedish massage techniques.”

The Rick Mercer Report covered the event, which aired on the November 17 show on CBC. Click here to watch Rick’s murderball adventures video on YouTube.
